WHO WE ARE
Here at Griffin First, we are about the power and presence of God. At the core of who we are, is the Spirit of God, who we believe supernaturally changes us like nothing else can. Doctrine is essential, but the move of God is also. Understanding the character of God, and who he is through the word leads us to seek the Holy Spirit, which changes us, convicts us, and gives us an unprecedented power to change this world.
We are about having a church that does not just come on a Sunday morning, Sunday night, or a Wednesday night, but is thriving everyday at home, work, or out in the community. We truly believe that one church can change the world.
That is who we seek to be at Griffin First.
2009 marked 70 years since Griffin First Assembly of God was organized during a tent revival in Experiment, GA. This great church is a product of the Pentecostal revival that swept the south in the 1930’s. A small group of Griffin believers organized the fellowship as Faith Pentecostal in the late 30’s. Edwards Street was the local meeting place for the tent revival that quickly exploded. The church carried the Faith Pentecostal name until 1940 when it became affiliated with the Assemblies of God. Sunday School services were held in different locations such as Quilly St. and Dundee Baseball Park. Older church members were baptized in the pond on Experiment Street. In 1939 the church grew out of the tent revival and a group of 30 to 45 people joined together to build a church. The first church building on Ruth Street was remodeled and enlarged twice before the congregation acquired a second location on Atlanta Road in 1952.
God however, had bigger things in store for this great church. A 90-acre tract of land was purchased at 2000 W. McIntosh Rd, and on the last Sunday in 1989, a new facility opened with a church building, Griffin Christian Academy, a day care center, youth building, and fellowship hall.
In 1993 First Assembly of God had the privilege of welcoming Randy and Jelly Valimont as the new Pastor. During the leadership of Pastor Valimont, there have been six building projects including Griffin Christian High School, gymnasium, The Family Life Center, football field, Royal Ranger Building and a new sanctuary and worship center that opened in July of 2003. The new sanctuary seats over 3,000 people. This is the current sanctuary used by First Assembly today.
Although buildings and grounds are important tools in the kingdom of God, nothing is more important than people. The focus of First Assembly is, has been, and will always be about people. Throughout history every building has been dedicated to advancing the kingdom of God.Today First Assembly through the vision of Pastor Valimont gives millions of dollars to missions each year. Over 4000 people proudly call First Assembly their home church. With over 300 ministries, there is a place for everyone. Pastor Valimont believes that one church can change a city, nation, and world.
It has been said that most churches’ effectiveness only lasts for 25 years, however Griffin First Assembly of God, 70 years later is standing strong. This is the product of prayer and fasting. It is because 70 years ago a group of people believed in reaching the lost. First Assembly has seen the miraculous. There have been countless healings, miracles, signs, and wonders. There are still great things in store for this church. God is still moving in the miraculous and each service is filled with the power and presence of God.
Thank you for celebrating 70 years of existence, influence, ministry, faithfulness and challenges. We are grateful to Almighty God, all of the glory and praise belongs to Him.
